About us

The Cornish Sharks American Football Team plays amateur, adult contact American football in Division 2 of the British American Football Association’s national league.

The team is part of the Cornish Sharks Academy of American Football, the mission of which is to make the sport of American Football available to ‘One and All’ throughout Cornwall.

The team has enjoyed its share of successes in the past decade and more, reaching the playoffs no less than five times.  There have been many challenges over the years – there are the obvious ones, such as geography (our remote location and the distances required to travel within the county for training) plus demographics (the low density population, below national average earnings and high levels of seasonal work).  But other challenges such as the  American airbase closing have meant the team needed to be flexible and be prepared for the future.   Losing our American friends was sad, but we also missed their amazing contribution and experience in helping to run a team as well as their talent in playing and coaching.  Coach Smallworth had prepared in advance for losing these important members by starting a youth programme in the County – he understood that the only sustainable way forward was to have youth players learn football from an early age and move up to play for the seniors.  That programme, brought challenges of its own but year in and year out, the team builds on its experiences – both positive and negative – and always gives its competition a run for their money.

The vision of the club “Football for One and All” doesn’t suit everyone – whilst we want to win, we are not prepared to win at any cost.  We are fussy about our Coaches, their methods and our welfare and equality policies.  The Cornish Sharks has a ‘long game’ and nothing can detract us from the mission that our family club is there for anyone to participate and enjoy the love of the game, despite any lack of experience, fitness, physique, background etc.  We will grow stronger as our youth programme gains momentum and whatever our results every year, we know that our players will have enjoyed their football.

There is a real buzz amongst the players, coaches and committee, with a great spirit and an excitement about the future, as well as a great family atmosphere, all helped in no small way by the great news that our long-term sponsors Sailors Arms are continuing their support.

We offer our gratitude to all our families, friends and supporters for their loyalty and commitment over the years and offer a big thank you to our many sponsors for their continued support, especially Sailors Arms, sponsors since our second year.

The further development of our youth set-up, our ladies team and many more projects in the pipeline, demonstrate our commitment for the future.
