Team Cornwall 2014
Ranked 3rd in the Country

The Cornish Sharks Academy of American Football was set up to ensure that all youngsters who want to play American Football in Cornwall have the opportunity to do so.  The Academy provides opportunities for young players to play in their own county and furthermore, supports players in their ambition to play the game to the level they desire - from local flag games to playing college in the USA and hopefully for them to play for the Cornish Sharks senior team.

Why? Cornwall is an area of low incomes and many families live below the poverty line.  Many young people feel disenfranchised and during Coach Smallworth’s years living in the South West the young people he talks to all have the same problem – they are bored, having nothing to do and spend much of their time sitting around in the town centres often getting into mischief which sadly, sometimes results in trouble with the Law.

During discussions with many young people he talked to them about setting up the Academy of American Football and the response was always the same – they want to join and to play. Even when he explains that it involves discipline in that they need to attend practice at a certain times, keep out of trouble and no drugs are allowed, they still remain engaged and they all said the same thing - yes and when can we join?  So the result is –

“The Cornish Sharks Academy of American Football”

The Cornish Sharks AFT is a "Clubmark" accredited club.  The mark is the only cross sport accreditation scheme for clubs with youth sections, giving an indication to parents and guardians of youngsters that the organization has rigorous procedures in place to ensure the health, safety and well-being of those in its care.  All our coaches are qualified to minimum Level 1, CRB checked and have a First Aid qualification.
