Coach’s Corner

April 2019

The season soon comes around and we have come a long way in a year. It was the start of our rebuild in 2018, and this is the second year of the rebuild after many players retired, moved away and some transferred.

We knew last year would be hard with 90% of our players never having played a competitive game. We started the season last April with only 24 players and we now have nearly three times that on our roster.

We’ve had a solid build up, with a new twelve week programme, which included our first residential camp, which was a huge hit with the players. A really intensive training programme for new players, and a chance for more experienced players to broaden their knowledge as well as sharing their knowledge with the rookies.

We also had a pre-season scrimmage (the first in many years) against premiership team, the Farnham Knights. We are really grateful to them for making the journey and they’ve told us they enjoyed it and so we hope this will become an annual event.

I am happy with the way our coaching staff are improving and how everyone has come together as a team.  Our youth programme is rolling out across the county again this year, and we have renewed interest from the ladies who will be having a taster day on 22 April in Newquay – all welcome. We also have considerable interest for a flag team.

We are also grateful for having many new sponsors this year as well as some loyal long-standing sponsors and a new strategic partner in Newquay AFC, enabling us to use the Mountwise Stadium. We are also thankful to Redruth Albany RFC, who continue as strategic partners for our training ground.

This is exciting times for the Cornish Sharks and we look forward to welcoming you to the Shark Tank!
